Seasonal Foraging ยท 2026

Fall foraging guide for beginners

Autumn is the season of plenty โ€” nuts, berries and roots to gather before winter. Here's what to find, and how.

01

Acorns

From any oak. Bitter tannins must be leached in water changes โ€” then it's real flour.

02

Hazelnuts

Wild filberts in their leafy husks. Beat the squirrels to them in early fall.

03

Rose Hips

After first frost, from wild roses. Vitamin C bombs โ€” scrape out the itchy seeds.

04

Hawthorn Berries

Red haws for jelly and syrup. โš  Never chew the seeds; use the flesh only.

05

Elderberries

Late clusters for syrup. โš  Always cooked โ€” raw berries and stems upset the stomach.

06

Late Mushrooms

Chicken of the woods and puffballs linger into fall. โš  Mushrooms demand 100% certainty โ€” confirm every ID.

โš  Fall's risks: hawthorn/elder seeds and any mushroom. Never eat without 100% certainty and a second source. When in doubt โ€” don't.
