Summer Harvest ยท 2026

Wild edible berries you can forage

Hedgerows are full of free fruit in summer โ€” and a few berries that can kill. Here's how to tell them apart.

The safe eight

01

Blackberry

Thorny canes, clustered drupelets. The safest starter berry โ€” nearly unmistakable.

02

Raspberry

Like blackberry but hollow when picked. Sweet, abundant, safe.

03

Elderberry

Dark clusters on umbels. โš  COOK them โ€” raw berries, stems and leaves upset the stomach.

04

Wild Blueberry

Low bushes, a five-point crown on the berry. A forager's favorite.

05

Mulberry

Long dark berries dropping from trees. Sweet and messy โ€” stain-your-hands good.

06

Wild Strawberry

Tiny, intense, real. โš  "Mock strawberry" is bland but harmless โ€” the real one tastes like summer.

07

Serviceberry

Blueberry-like pomes on small trees. Underrated and safe.

08

Rose Hips

After first frost, from wild roses. Vitamin C bombs โ€” scrape out the itchy seeds.

โ˜  Never eat: pokeweed berries (dark, drooping clusters), nightshade berries (shiny black), and holly/yew berries. When a berry is unfamiliar, leave it โ€” no berry is worth a poisoning.
